The Arizona Coyotes will put the league's longest active winning streak on the line on Thursday night when they host the Philadelphia Flyers in Tempe, Ariz.
The Coyotes will try to polish off just the second 5-0 homestand in team history and bring a five-game winning streak into the contest. Even more impressive, all five victories have come against teams that won the Stanley Cup over the past six seasons.
Arizona started the streak with a 2-0 win at reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas. It returned home to defeat Tampa Bay (2020, 2021) 3-1, and followed that up with a 4-3 overtime win against Colorado (2022) and a 4-1 victory over St. Louis (2019) before shutting out the Washington Capitals (2018) 6-0 on Monday.
Mullett Arena, the Coyotes' temporary 5,000-seat home on the Arizona State University campus, has turned into a real home-ice advantage for Arizona. The Coyotes are fourth in the Central Division with 28 points and an impressive 8-4-0 mark at home this season.
"The whole building has a different feel right now," said Arizona goaltender Connor Ingram, who made 26 saves against the Capitals for his second shutout of the season. "When you get on a streak like this, this is what people want to see around here. It's fun to play here right now, the people are into it, and that's why you play the game."
Coyotes forward Nick Schmaltz, who scored two goals on Monday, agreed.
"It's a lot of fun," Schmaltz said. "Everything's fun when you're winning. ... We're working for each other, guys are blocking shots when we're up 6-0. You can tell guys are there for each other."
Ingram was named the NHL's First Star of the Week on Monday. He has won all five starts during the winning streak, beginning with a 34-save shutout in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights.
"It's a huge honor," Ingram said of the award. "I think it's a team stat, and I think it's great for everyone around here to get some recognition."
Philadelphia, beginning a three-game road trip against Central Division teams that includes stops at Colorado on Saturday and Nashville on Tuesday, brings a three-game point streak (2-0-1) into the contest after sweeping its two-game home-and-home with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Flyers won the opener, 4-3, in a shootout at Pittsburgh on Saturday and then completed the sweep of the Keystone State series with a 2-1 overtime win on Monday.
Sean Couturier scored the overtime winner, the sixth of his career, on a one-timer from the right circle off a cross-ice feed from Travis Konecny. Carter Hart finished with 31 saves to lead Philadelphia on Monday.
"We got really good goaltending (Monday)," Flyers coach John Tortorella said. "We score a goal, score a timely goal, great faceoff play at the end. We're blocking shots; we've done all those things that we have to do. We're just going to continue doing that and see where it all goes.
"I think we play hard pretty consistently," Tortorella added. "And if you play hard and you have the room that we have right now, the togetherness, I think you'll find a way to compete in this league."
