Cole Caufield scored with 44 seconds remaining in overtime to give the visiting Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.

Mike Matheson and Nick Suzuki, who each scored a goal, assisted on the winner. Matheson had two assists, giving him a point on every goal.

Cayden Primeau was credited with 27 saves as the Canadiens snapped a four-game winless streak.

Christian Fischer scored his first goal of the season for the Red Wings. J.T. Compher had the other goal and James Reimer made 23 saves.

Montreal converted on 2 of 5 power play chances while the Red Wings came up empty on four power plays. Detroit racked up 22 minutes in penalties, compared to 10 for Montreal.

Despite picking up a point, the Wings have lost six of their last eight games.

With 1:33 left in overtime, Reimer was called for a penalty for holding Caufield's stick. Caufield scored from the left circle with a shot that tumbled over Reimer's right shoulder.

Matheson's third goal of the season was the only one of the first period.

Montreal scored in transition as Alex Newhook picked up a loose puck at center ice, skated into the Detroit zone and fed it to Matheson. His wrister beat Reimer on the stick side.

The Canadiens nearly made it 2-0 in the second period but an apparent goal was waved off upon review due to the play being offside. Detroit knotted the score with 3:16 left in the period when the puck deflected off Fischer's body and past Primeau. Michael Rasmussen, who took the initial shot, and Ben Chiarot were credited with assists.

With Dylan Larkin in the penalty box, Suzuki scored his fifth goal in the opening minute of the third. His wrister eluded Reimer on the glove side. Matheson and Sean Monahan had the assists.

At 6:06 of the period, Compher tied it when he went top shelf from the left circle to beat Primeau.
