Alexander Barabanov scored the overtime winning goal to give the host San Jose Sharks a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.

Kevin Labanc also scored for the struggling Sharks, who had lost six of their previous eight games (2-5-1). James Reimer made 22 saves for the win.

While the Sharks were enjoying a four-on-three power play in overtime, Tomas Hertl had a couple of chances from the doorstep. The puck finally squirted to Barabanov at the side of the cage, just after the man advantage ended. He deposited the rebound for his third goal of the season at 1:42.

Tony DeAngelo collected a goal for the Hurricanes, who lost for the first time in five games and have dropped only three of their 17 dates this season. Antti Raanta stopped 25 shots for the squad that sits atop the Metropolitan Division. However, it was a far cry from the Hurricanes' usual standard, with Raanta standing tall throughout the game to fend off Carolina, including a couple of clutch saves on Timo Meier.

Following a scoreless first period, DeAngelo put the visitors ahead at 1:16 of the middle frame. Seconds after one of his shot attempts from the point was blocked, the Hurricanes defenseman had the puck come to him again, and he unloaded a top-corner bomb that found the mark for his fourth goal of the season.

As the Sharks appeared destined to be shut out for the second consecutive game, Labanc evened the count at the 3:54 mark of the third period.

After Matt Nieto forced a turnover with his forechecking, Jasper Weatherby fed the puck to Labanc at the right faceoff dot. Labanc immediately ripped home a shot period for his third goal -- and first even-strength point -- of the season. The goal ended San Jose's goalless string at 135 minutes and 38 seconds.

San Jose defenseman Erik Karlsson played his 800th career NHL game. The Sharks also summed forward Scott Reedy, who led the AHL's San Jose Barracuda with 12 points, for his NHL debut. The 22-year-old had an even rating in 10:56 of ice time.
