Elias Pettersson scored 40 seconds into overtime as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 1-0 on Thursday night.

Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 43 saves to post his first shutout of the season. It was Markstrom's second appearance since returning from his father's funeral in his native Sweden.

Carolina's Petr Mrazek stopped 25 of 26 shots but the Hurricanes' three-game winning streak came to an end.

Pettersson took a pass from Brock Boeser and put a backhander from the slot over Mrazek's right shoulder for the winner. It was the 13th goal of the season for Pettersson, the reigning Calder Trophy winner as the league's Rookie of the Year.

The Hurricanes appeared to take the lead midway through the second period as Sebastian Aho chipped the puck over Markstrom from just outside the right post during a delayed-penalty situation against Vancouver. The puck trickled through a maze of Canucks defenders in the slot and off the tip of Jordie Benn's skate on its way to Aho, but officials blew the play dead for the penalty just as Aho was taking his shot. Both Aho and Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour complained to the officials that Vancouver never had control of the puck, but to no avail.

Markstrom made 30 saves through the first two periods, including an unusual one in the final minute of the second. Carolina's Lucas Wallmark took a sharp-angled shot from the right wing with 49 seconds left in the period, with Markstrom holding his ground at the near post. The play was whistled dead, but the puck was nowhere to be found. Markstrom checked his equipment while two Hurricanes searched the back of the net.

After a couple of minutes, Canucks forward Tim Schaller reached down the back of Markstrom's jersey and found the puck.

Both goalies made saves on breakaways midway through the third period on a four-on-four situation. Markstrom made a skate save on Carolina's Brett Pesce, then Mrazek smothered a shot by Vancouver's Jake Virtanen.
