Matthews, who amassed 10 goals while scoring at least one goal in six consecutive games to open the season, did not have a goal Monday.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored for the Kings, who went 1-3-0 on a four-game road trip that ended in Toronto.

Garret Sparks started in goal for the Maple Leafs because No. 1 goaltender Frederik Andersen was listed as day-to-day with a knee injury. Sparks made 33 saves.

Kings goaltender Jack Campbell stopped 21 shots.

Kapanen scored 46 seconds into the first period on a shot from behind the goal that he deliberately banked in off Campbell and into the net. Matthews and Gardiner assisted.

The Kings came close 16 seconds later when Tyler Toffoli rang a shot off the post.

The Maple Leafs took a 2-0 lead on a power play at 19:38 of the first period. Marleau scored his first goal of the season, beating Campbell on the far side from close in. Adrian Kempe was off for holding. Josh Leivo and Gardiner got assists.

Kovalchuk scored his second goal of the season at 3:38 of the second period on a wrist shot through Sparks' five-hole after a Toronto turnover. Alex Iafallo and Derek Forbort had assists.

Marner scored his fourth goal of the season, completing a nifty passing combination with John Tavares and Zach Hyman at 8:32 of the second for a 3-1 lead. It came on the transition after Sparks had made a good save.

The Kings failed to score on a power play two minutes into the third period to go 0-for-3 on the game. Los Angeles is 0-for-21 for the season with a man advantage.
