Ryan Tannehill threw two touchdown passes and the visiting Miami Dolphins held on for a 20-12 victory against the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon at East Rutherford, N.J.

Tannehill was 17-for-23 for 168 yards, but he absorbed four sacks and the Dolphins (2-0) didn't score in the second half.

Yet he put together a 12-play drive that ate up the last 5:56 to end the game. The Dolphins reached the New York 14-yard line, but with the Jets without a timeout after the two-minute warning Tannehill took a knee after the last three snaps.

So the Jets, after cutting into the deficit, never got a final shot in the matchup between AFC East rivals.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold couldn't get New York (1-1) into the end zone enough despite completing 25 of 41 throws for 334 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Kenyan Drake's 6-yard run opened the scoring in the first quarter as Miami was on the way to building a 20-0 lead by halftime.

The Dolphins converted twice in a four-minute span late in the first half, with Tannehill's 29-yard touchdown pass to Albert Wilson the first of those scores.

Miami was right back at it, with Tannehill throwing to A.J. Derby for 19 yards for a touchdown with 42 seconds to play in the half.

The Jets didn't score until early in the third quarter when Bilal Powell scored on a 28-yard pass play from Darnold.

Even then, the Jets failed when Jason Myers' extra-point kick was wide.

It was a strange game in some respects, with the Jets holding a 17-14 edge in first downs early in the fourth quarter.

The Jets caught a break after their touchdown, with Miami reaching New York territory before fumbling. The Jets moved just 22 yards in 11 plays, using up more than six minutes but settling for Myers' 55-yard field goal.

New York used a 10-play drive to draw within one possession when Myers was good from 41 yards out, making it 20-12 with 5:56 remaining.
