Iowa State's two-point conversion pass that would have given it the lead failed with 24 seconds left in regulation and the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners survived a late comeback bid to defeat the Cyclones 42-41 on Saturday night in Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes and rushed for two more to pace the Oklahoma offense, but his late-game interception while holding a seven-point lead gave Iowa State renewed life.

Brock Purdy's 13-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Kolar eight plays later put the Cyclones within a point, and the Sooners' playoff hopes on the brink. But on the conversion, Oklahoma (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) generated pressure on Brock Purdy, who threw off his back foot into tight coverage. The pass glanced off the hands of receiver La'Michael Pettway and Oklahoma's Parnell Motley grabbed the deflection to preserve Oklahoma's one-point lead.

The Sooners recovered the subsequent onside kick to secure the win.

Iowa State (5-4, 3-3) trailed 35-14 at halftime and 42-21 entering the fourth quarter, but made a furious comeback to make it a game. Down 42-28, Iowa State got a 33-yard scoring pass from Purdy to Sean Shaw Jr. with 3:35 left to make it 42-35.

Then, with Oklahoma facing third and seven, Hurts threw a pass while running toward the right sideline that Iowa State's Lawrence White picked off and returned six yards to the Oklahoma 35 with 2 1/2 minutes left in the fourth to set up the dramatic finish.

Hurts accounted for five touchdowns in the first half, including 48- and 63-yard strikes to receiver CeeDee Lamb. Kennedy Brooks gave the Sooners a 42-21 lead late in the third quarter with a 48-yard touchdown run before Iowa State made its late rally.

Hurts finished 18 of 26 passing for 273 yards with the three scores and the one interception. Purdy finished 19 of 30 for 282 yards and five touchdowns without a turnover. He also ran for 55 yards and a score.

Lamb caught eight balls for 167 yards, while Brooks paced the Sooners' ground attack with 132 yards and the one score on 15 carries.
