Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman completed 40 of 55 passes for 436 yards and two touchdowns and ran for one more score as the Red Raiders rolled to a 45-10 victory over Montana State in Lubbock, Texas, in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Texas Tech finished with 691 yards of total offense -- the Bobcats had 289 -- and Bowman kept the Red Raiders moving throughout.

The offensive outburst gave Matt Kelly a victory in his first game as the Texas Tech coach. Also, the Red Raiders ended a five-game losing streak, dating back to last season, which is why they finished 2018 with a 5-7 record.

This was just the second time the two teams have met -- the first game was in 1939 when Texas Tech scored a 35-0 victory.

Bowman led the way in the first half when he completed 24 of 31 for 247 yards and a touchdown as Texas Tech took a 28-7.

The Red Raiders scored touchdowns on their first two drives and never looked back. On their first possession, Bowman threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to McLane Mannix for a 7-0 lead.

They made it 14-0 when SaRodorick Thompson ran for a 1-yard touchdown.

The Bobcats halved the lead in the second quarter when quarterback Casey Bauman threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Coy Steel with 9:42 left. Bauman went 7 of 19 passing for 120 yards and the one score.

But Texas Tech quickly took command again when Armand Shyne broke free up the middle for a 69-yard touchdown run on the second play of the next series, giving the Red Raiders a 21-7 lead just 29 seconds later. Shyne finished with 125 yards on just 11 carries.

Thompson struck again by running for a 3-yard touchdown with only 50 seconds left in the half to put Texas Tech up 28-7.

The Red Raiders scored the only points of the third quarter on Trey Wolff's 30-yard field goal on the opening drive that ate up over five minutes.

Bowman then tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Xavier White early in the fourth quarter that stretched the lead to 38-7, and he later ran for a 5-yard score around the right end.

White finished with five catches for 107 yards.
