Oscar Tshiebwe scored 20 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, leading West Virginia to a 68-53 win at Pittsburgh on Friday night in basketball's version of the Backyard Brawl rivalry.

Forward Emmitt Matthews Jr. scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half for the Mountaineers (2-0). Back-to-back layups from Matthews, who had eight rebounds, gave West Virginia an insurmountable 60-46 lead with 4:05 to play. West Virginia took a 17-point lead, its largest of the night, less than a minute later.

Sophomore Trey McGowens led Pitt with 13 points and Justin Champagnie added 12 points with five rebounds off the bench. The Panthers didn't make a single field goal for almost six minutes down the stretch in the second half, and made just 3 of 25 second-half shots.

Pitt (2-2) lost its second straight nonconference home game, the first time that has happened since the 1996-97 season. West Virginia has won four straight in the rivalry.

The Panthers went 7 1/2 minutes without a made basket to start the second half, but the Mountaineers never led by more than eight during that span.

The first half saw West Virginia lead by as many as eight points with Brandon Knapper's 3-pointer put the Mountaineers ahead 26-18 with 7:06 left in the half.

Pitt rallied, but WVU went up 31-24 on the third of Sean McNeil's three 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes with 4:16 to go.

The Panthers took the lead, 35-34, on McGowens' 3-pointer with 1:24 left. Pitt held three leads of one point in the first half and trailed 36-35 at halftime.

Tshiebwe also blocked three shots. West Virginia out-rebounded the Panthers 51-36 and held Pitt to just 18 second-half points.
