Sophomore guard Tre Jones scored a career-high 31 points as No. 2 Duke overcame a ragged first half to defeat visiting Georgia State 74-63 on Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Jones scored 10 points during Duke's 13-0 run to break away from a 40-40 second-half tie.

With top-ranked Kentucky losing earlier in the week to Evansville, Duke could move to No. 1 when the new rankings come out next week.

Freshman center Vernon Carey Jr. racked up 20 points and 14 rebounds for his most productive outing for Duke, which won every game during a three-game homestand by double-digit margins. This was the closest of the three games.

Duke (4-0) didn't have a player score 20 points in any of its first three games. Jones made 10 of 19 shots from the field, including 4-for-8 on 3-pointers on Friday.

Other than Jones, the rest of the Blue Devils missed their first 13 shots from 3-point range. Then reserve Joey Baker bagged a couple of 3s as Duke took control during the second half.

Duke held a 58-32 rebounding advantage. The Blue Devils grabbed 30 offensive rebounds.

It was the 150th consecutive nonconference home-court victory for the Blue Devils -- a streak that spans nearly 20 years.

Corey Allen's 20 points and Kane Williams 16 points paced the Panthers.

Jones scored 17 first-half points but Duke led only 36-34, with the go-ahead basket coming on Matthew Hurt's putback in the waning seconds.

Jones, who missed most of Tuesday night's game against Central Arkansas after he suffered a first-half head injury, was back in the starting lineup. He scored eight points in the first 5 1/2 minutes, and 13 of Duke's first 22 points.

Georgia State moved ahead 26-25 on two Williams free throws at the 5:37 mark. The Panthers committed 12 first-half turnovers, but Duke had 10 giveaways by the break.

Carey had an 11-point, nine-rebound first half.

Georgia State fell to 0-26 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.
