Braxton Beverly scored 23 points and North Carolina State bounced back from a season-opening loss to defeat Detroit Mercy, 84-65, on Sunday in Raleigh, N.C.

C.J. Bryce added 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field for the Wolfpack, who held a double-digit lead for most of the game. Devon Daniels came off the bench for 14 points.

Beverly hit six shots from 3-point range. Other than the junior guard's 6-for-8 shooting on 3s, the rest of the team checked in at a combined 4-for-21 from long range.

NC State (1-1) lost its opener in Atlantic Coast Conference play in overtime Tuesday night to visiting Georgia Tech. The Wolfpack avoided what would have been the first 0-2 start to a season since 1993-94.

Antoine Davis scored 28 points for Detroit Mercy, which was playing in its season opener. He was 11-for-23 from the field, including 2-for-10 on 3-pointers. The guard also had six rebounds and four assists.

NC State used a 10-0 run early in the game to build a lead. With three minutes remaining, the Wolfpack held a 21-point lead that was trimmed to 14 before Bryce scored again.

NC State point guard Markell Johnson, who missed Tuesday night's game because of an ankle injury suffered in practice, struggled with his shot by making only one of his eight attempts (1 of 6 on 3-pointers). He finished with three points and distributed 10 assists, while also pulling in a team-high seven rebounds.

The Wolfpack led 43-30 at halftime.

Detroit Mercy shot only 5-for-25 on 3-point attempts. The Titans were charged with 15 turnovers after averaging just more than 11 giveaways per game last season for the lowest mark among Horizon League teams.

Other than Davis, the rest of the team's starters combined for only 17 points. Three reserves racked up a total of 20 points.

Detroit Mercy held a 40-33 rebounding advantage, with 11 offensive rebounds.
