SMU dominated the game from the opening tip. The Mustangs jumped out to a 30-5 lead in less than 10 minutes and never looked back, eventually taking a 50-27 edge into halftime.

Davis scored 15 points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting, including going 3-for-5 from 3-point range, while Phelps added 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting.

However, the Mustangs' hot shooting was limited to Davis and Phelps. SMU shot a red-hot 60.6 percent (20-for-33) from the floor and 6-for-15 (40 percent) from 3-point range. The Mustangs had 10 layups or dunks in the first half.

On defense, the Mustangs overwhelmed the Lions, who committed 11 turnovers that resulted in 18 points for SMU in the first 20 minutes. The Lions also shot just 27.3 percent (9-for-33) from the floor before the break. That was impacted by their inability to make shots from beyond the arc, as they went just 2-for-15 from 3-point range.
