Senior guard Denzel Valentine overcame a poor shooting night to lead all scorers with 17 points and No. 1 Michigan State held off Florida 58-52 on Saturday at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.

Valentine, who also grabbed five rebounds, made 5 of 17 field-goal attempts.

Senior shooting guard Bryn Forbes contributed 12 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Spartans (11-0). Senior center Matt Costello added eight points, six rebounds and three blocks for Michigan State, which held Florida to five points in the final 7:16.

The Gators (6-3) had four players in double figures, led by junior guard Kasey Hill and senior power forward Dorian Finney-Smith, who had 13 points and six rebounds apiece. Sophomore guard Chris Chiozza added 11 points and sophomore forward Devin Robinson supplied 10 points and nine rebounds.

Valentine's 3-pointer with 16:39 remaining gave Michigan State a 38-30 lead. The Gators responded with an 8-0 run that included to two 3-pointers from Chiozza. Florida soon pulled ahead 45-42 on a Finney-Smith 3-pointer.

Forbes' 3-pointer with 6:02 left put Michigan State in front 51-47. A tip-in by sophomore forward Marvin Clark Jr. nudged the Spartans' lead to 56-50 with 2:17 left.

The Spartans led 27-25 at halftime despite committing nine turnovers.
