Arizona State 86, UNLV 80: Jahii Carson scored 26 of his career-high 40 points in the second half as the visiting Sun Devils remained unbeaten with an impressive win over the Rebels.

Jermaine Marshall scored 20 points and Jordan Bachynski collected 17 points and 15 rebounds for Arizona State (4-0), which outscored the Rebels 52-42 in the second half. Carson was 16-of-25 from the field and contributed seven assists.

The Sun Devils prevailed despite an outstanding effort by Roscoe Smith, who led the Rebels (2-2) with career highs of 18 points and 21 rebounds. Kevin Olekaibe added 14 points and Bryce Dejean-Jones and Kendall Smith had 13 apiece for UNLV, which led 38-34 at the break.

Marshall made one of his three 3-pointers with 6:14 remaining to give the Sun Devils the lead at 73-68 before UNLV answered with four straight points. The Sun Devils responded with a decisive 8-2 run, capped by Marshall’s layup with 3:15 to play.

Khem Birch had 11 points and 14 rebounds for UNLV, which missed 14 of its 29 shots from the foul line. Arizona State improved to 4-0 for the second straight season despite shooting 5-of-20 from 3-point range and 11-of-20 from the foul line.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona State’s 43 first-half field goal attempts were 11 more than its previous high of 32 for a half this season. … Olekaibe, who scored 30 points against the Sun Devils two years ago when he played for Fresno State, was 5-of-17 from the field and missed seven of his 10 shots from 3-point range. … Dejean-Jones put UNLV ahead 46-41 early in the second half with a one-handed dunk over the 7-2 Bachynski, the Sun Devils’ all-time leading shot blocker.
