Tennessee 83, Massachusetts 69: Jarnell Stokes had a career-high 24 points as the Volunteers pulled away from the Minutemen in the third-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Bayamon.

Stokes added a season-high 12 rebounds and Jordan McRae chipped in 12 points for Tennessee (3-1), which rebounded from a dreadful 45-point performance Friday in which it matched a tournament record-low with 13 field goals.

After Massachusetts (2-2) knotted the game at 54 with 8:31 remaining, Tennessee assumed control on a 3-pointer by McRae. Stokes and Josh Richardson combined to score the next eight as the Volunteers rolled off 14 unanswered points before Sampson Carter ended the run with a pair of free throws.

Carter and Jesse Morgan each drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to seven with 3:21 left, but Richardson and Stokes combined to six of the next eight points to give Tennessee a double-digit bulge it would not relinquish.

Chaz Williams, the 5-9 point guard who sprained his ankle in Friday’s loss to North Carolina State, had 16 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals for UMass.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Stokes, a sophomore, recorded his second double-double of the season, matching the number he had all of last season. … Tennessee outscored UMass 38-24 in the paint. … The Volunteers committed 16 turnovers, but the Minutemen negated their advantage by recording 28 fouls.
