Jamaal Franklin had 18 points and a season-high 15 rebounds and Chase Tapley scored 16 points as the Aztecs knocked off the visiting Tigers.

Deshawn Stephens added 13 points to help San Diego State (6-1) win its sixth straight game following a season-opening loss to Syracuse.

Omar Strong scored 15 points and Fred Sturdivant had 14 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots for Texas Southern (1-7), which dropped its fifth consecutive game.

San Diego State jumped out to a 16-3 lead as the Tigers missed their first nine field-goal attempts. Stephens scored 12 points in the half to help the Aztecs to a 34-16 edge at the break.

Texas Southern was within 36-27 after Sturdivant’s basket with 16:32 to play but San Diego State led by double digits for most of the second half. Tapley scored 11 of his points over a four-minute stretch, the final basket giving the Aztecs a 65-50 lead with 5:14 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Franklin posted his 17th career double-double and fourth of the season. … Texas Southern was 5-of-27 from the field in the first half before shooting 52.8 percent in the second to finish at 38.7 percent. … San Diego State shot 88.2 percent from the line; Texas Southern hit 58.3 percent.
