Phil Martin made the go-ahead layup with 22.4 seconds left, helping UC Riverside cap a huge comeback to beat Washington State 64-63 in the seventh-place game of the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

The Highlanders (2-4) played from behind nearly the entire game, falling into a quick 13-3 hole and trailed by as much as 56-39 late in the second half. Martin fueled a 12-0 run for the Highlanders to get back into the game, scoring nine straight during that stretch.

UC Riverside tied it three times in the final four minutes before going ahead for good on Martin’s inside bucket. The Highlanders leading scorer finished with 14 points. UC Riverside got 13 from Harrison Gaines off the bench and 10 points from Elliott Berry.

The Cougars (2-4) went 0-3 at the 76 Classic but this loss had to sting the most. Washington State didn’t trail at all until Gaines’s jumper with 1:30 remaining in the game. The Cougars went dry offensively late, scoring just seven points in the final 7:05.

Brock Mutum led three Cougars in double figures with 15 points. Faisal Aden (14 points) and Reggie Moore (10 points) also reached double figures.
