Ashton Gibbs scored 22 points and Tray Woodall had his best game since returning to the lineup as Pittsburgh topped visiting Providence 86-74 to snap an eight-game losing streak on Wednesday.

Woodall, who had missed 11 of the previous 13 games due to injury, collected 17 points and nine assists, guiding the Panthers to their highest point total since Dec. 6.

Nasir Robinson added 14 points and six rebounds for Pittsburgh (12-9, 1-7 Big East).

The Panthers led, 23-20 with 7:00 left in the first half when coach Jamie Dixon called a timeout. Woodall buried a 3-pointer out of the stoppage and Gibbs buried four from beyond the arc in the final 1:57 of the half as Pittsburgh closed the period with a 23-11 burst.

The Friars (12-9, 1-7) crept within 70-63 with less than eight minutes left in the game. But the Panthers locked down defensively, holding Providence without a point for nearly four minutes to regain control.

Vincent Council finished with 26 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Friars, who have dropped three straight since securing their lone Big East win over Louisville on Jan. 10.
