Josh Huestis had 13 points and 11 rebounds as Stanford avoided Utah’s upset bid with a 68-65 win over the visiting Utes on Thursday.

After Dijon Farr’s layup with nine seconds left brought Utah (4-13, 1-3 Pac-12) within three points, the Utes had a chance to force overtime with 1.9 seconds to go. Josh Watkins’ shot fell short, giving Stanford (14-3, 4-1 Pac-12) the win.

Josh Owens and Chasson Randle scored 11 points apiece for Stanford, which was coming off a 103-101 win over Oregon State in four overtimes last Sunday. John Gage added nine points on three 3-pointers.

Utah opened the game shooting 1-of-11 before recovering to shoot 50.9 percent from the field. Chris Hines had a career-high 21 points, and Watkins added 16 points and five assists.

Both teams struggled mightily at the free-throw line, shooting a combined 6-of-26.

Utah made their first 10 shots of the second half and led 47-44 with 12:19 to play, but the Utes fell behind by seven after going the next six-and-a-half minutes without a basket.

It was the teams’ first meeting since the 1997 Sweet 16, when the Utes won 82-77 in overtime.
