Josh Watkins hit the game-winning shot with 3.3 seconds left in overtime as part of a 20-point performance to lead Utah to a 62-60 victory over visiting Washington State on Thursday.

Watkins’ 15-foot shot bounced off the front of the rim, kissed the glass and dropped in the hoop to give the Utes (4-10, 1-1 Pac-12) an impressive comeback victory.

Brock Motum matched his career-high with 27 points and made 10-of-12 shots but couldn’t prevent the Cougars (9-6, 1-2) from losing for only the second time in nine games.

Watkins also was the hero at the end of regulation, hitting a 13-footer in the lane with 16.2 seconds left to force the overtime.

Utah trailed 46-38 after Motum’s three-point play with 9:22 left but controlled play the remainder of regulation. The Utes pulled within 47-44 on Dijon Farr’s hoop with 5:21 to play and finally caught Washington State on Watkins’ clutch basket.

Jason Washburn added 11 points and Farr scored 10 for the Utes. Faisal Aden scored 11 points for the Cougars, who made only 10-of-22 free throws.

Washington State trailed by six points early in the second half when Motum hit a 3-pointer to start a 20-6 run.

The Utes led by as many as nine points in the first half en route to a 29-23 intermission lead.
