Freshman Julien Lewis scored a season-high 19 points to help hot-shooting Texas roll past visiting Texas State 86-52 on Saturday.

The Longhorns (7-2) used a strong defensive effort to build a 38-19 halftime edge and opened the second half blazing hot, hitting nine of their first 10 shots and taking a 63-26 advantage on Lewis’ 3-pointer with 14:15 remaining.

Lewis topped his previous high of 18 set in the season opener against Boston University.

Freshman point guard Myck Kabongo - the Big 12 leader in assists - added 13 points and seven assists for Texas, which beat Texas State for the 23rd straight time.

Eddie Rios had 11 points to lead the Bobcats (6-3), who had a three-game winning snapped by shooting only 14 percent in the first half to dig an insurmountable hole.

Texas State came into the game ranked second nationally at 87.5 points per game, but the Bobcats missed 17 of their first 19 shots and found themselves down 32-14 with four minutes left before halftime.

The Longhorns’ early lead ballooned to 20 points when Clint Chapman’s layup with 2:26 left made it 36-16.

Texas finished 9-of-18 from 3-point range and outrebounded the Bobcats 36-23.
