Syracuse delivered an early knockout punch, in the form of a 40-9 run to close the first half, en route to an easy 92-47 victory over Colgate at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse (4-0) improved to 119-45 all-time in its oldest rivalry, dating back to 1902 as coach Jim Boeheim earned career win No. 860. He is just the fifth Division I coach to reach that level.

Colgate (1-2) has lost 46 straight games to Syracuse and is now 81-195 all-time against current Big East programs.

The Orange turned up the intensity with a full-court press midway through the first half, quickly converting turnovers into two 3-point baskets from reserve forward James Southerland which sparked the 31-point swing for Syracuse.

Dion Waiters, who led the Orange with 16 points, was one of three Syracuse reserves to score in double figures. The bench combined for 60 points, while the starting five, led by Scoop Jardine’s 11 points , combined for 32 points in the one-sided win. Syracuse shot 49 percent from the field. Star forward Kris Joseph did not play in the second half.

The Raiders opened the second half with two quick 3-pointers, but barely dented the Orange’s 33-point halftime lead. Pat Moore paced Colgate with 19 points, shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.

The Orange threw zone and man-to-man defense at the Raiders. Their length overwhelmed Colgate inside, recording eight blocks – six of which came in the first half – and 17 steals while limiting the Raiders to 34 percent shooting.

Former Syracuse great Gerry McNamara was promoted from graduate manager to a special assistant after assistant coach Bernie Fine was put on administrative leave due to child sex abuse claims from a former Syracuse ball boy.
