Eric Atkins poured in a career-best 27 points as Notre Dame began its season by pulling away for an 80-67 win over visiting Mississippi Valley State.

Atkins, who also led the Fighting Irishwith six assists, was a perfect 12-for-12 from the foul line and hit all three of his 3-point attempts. He finished the afternoon 6-of-7 from the field overall.

After the Delta Devils got within two, 50-48, on a 3-pointer by Falando Jones with 12:33 remaining, Jerian Grant responded with a three-point play to spark a 20-4 Notre Dame run. Atkins chipped in eight points, including six free throws, during the spurt.

Scott Martin finished with 15 points for the Fighting Irish, who made 24 of 29 foul shots. MVSU was just 3-of-8 from the line.

Kevin Burwell and Terrence Joyner paced four Delta Devils in double figures with 14 points apiece.
