Ashley Hamilton scored 23 points and visiting Loyola Marymount shot 10-for-15 from 3-point range to stun No. 20 UCLA 69-58 on Friday for its first victory over the Bruins since 1941.

Anthony Ireland added 21 points for the Lions (1-0), who snapped a 14-game losing streak to UCLA and were playing a ranked opponent in their season opener for the first time since 1989.

The Lions led most of the game and won with relative ease despite the absence of forward Drew Viney, who is out recovering from foot surgery.

The Bruins (1-0) had the size advantage thanks to a frontcourt augmented by North Carolina transfers David Wear and Travis Wear. However, the perimeter game did not hold up its end as UCLA went 2-of-15 from long range.

The Wear twins accounted for nearly half of UCLA’s total output; David scored 13 points and Travis 11. Reeves Nelson matched David Wear for the team lead in scoring. Point guard Lazeric Jones struggled with three points on 1-of-12 shooting.

This wasn't the first time UCLA struggled against a mid-major in a season opener. The Bruins lost to Cal Fullerton in 2009.
