No. 24 Michigan State needed overtime for the second game in a row to oust Northwestern 71-67 Saturday in East Lansing, Mich.

The win gave Michigan State (12-5 overall, 4-1 Big Ten) a share of second place in the conference with Purdue, which had the day off.

Draymond Green made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 60-60 and force overtime. In the extra session, Northwestern went up 65-62 with 3:02 to go, before a Green dunk and a 3-pointer and two free throws by Keith Appling put Michigan State up 69-65 with 1:29 remaining.

Appling led Michigan State with 19 points. Kalin Lucas had 18 points for the Spartans, and Green finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Michigan State shot 20 of 54 (37 percent) from the field but was 24 of 27 (88.9 percent) from the free-throw line.

Drew Crawford scored 16 points for Northwestern (11-5, 2-4 Big Ten). Michael Thompson had 15 points and five assists, and Luka Mirkovic chipped in 10 points.

The Spartans held John Shurna to just six points, well under his 20.1 scoring average.
