Jacob Pullen scored 20 points and No. 3 Kansas State started its eagerly anticipated season with a 75-61 victory over James Madison on Friday.

Moved from off guard to the point this season to replace the departed Denis Clemente, Pullen was 5-of-10 from the field, hit three three-pointers and added four assists for the Wildcats (1-0).

Nick Russell showed that the Wildcats may have another explosive pairing in the backcourt this season as he added 19 points.

Behind Clemente and Pullen, Kansas State advanced to the Elite Eight last season before bowing out to Butler. Despite the loss of Clemente, the Wildcats return their leading scorer from a year ago in Pullen and were the preseason pick to win the Big 12.

Kansas State held a 38-30 lead at the half and went on a 17-8 spurt to open the second half.

Rayshawn Goins scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Dukes (0-1), who fell to 0-4 all time against teams from the Big 12.

James Madison hung in there on the boards and shot 45 percent (21-of-47) from the field, but was outscored 30-12 from the arc.
