Jo Adell ended a no-hit bid by Blake Snell with a two-run single in the seventh inning, and the visiting Los Angeles Angels held on for a 4-0 win against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night in the opener of their two-game series.

Snell brought a perfect game into the seventh inning before issuing two walks. After both runners moved up on stolen bases, Adell lined a two-out, two-strike pitch just out of the reach of diving shortstop Jake Cronenworth, ending the no-hitter and breaking the scoreless tie.

Snell (7-6) departed after allowing two runs and one hit in seven innings, striking out 11 and walking two.

Snell was coming off seven no-hit innings in his last start, against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 31. He was removed from that 3-0 win after his pitch count climbed to 107.

Snell had thrown 66 pitches through six innings on Tuesday, striking out at least two batters in five of the first six innings. He had retired 28 straight overall dating to his last start, when Angels second baseman David Fletcher walked to lead off the seventh.

Snell's no-hitter appeared over when Luis Rengifo pushed a bunt toward first base. Rengifo originally was ruled safe on the foot race to the bag, but a video review showed Snell tagged him before he touched first.

Fletcher then stole third with one out. Snell struck out Phil Gosselin on the ninth pitch of his at-bat, but Jack Mayfield kept the inning alive with an eight-pitch walk.

Mayfield stole second and scored behind Fletcher on Adell's base hit for the 2-0 lead.

Snell needed 34 pitches to get through the seventh.

Rengifo tacked on a solo homer in the ninth, and Adell drove in another run with a groundout to make it 4-0.

Angels left-hander Packy Naughton threw five shutout innings in his second major-league start. The left-hander gave up two hits, struck out five and walked two.

Angels relievers Jimmy Herget (2-1), Steve Cishek and Raisel Iglesias finished the shutout.

The Padres are tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the second wild-card spot in the National League playoff race.
