AJ Pollock hit a two-run home run in the 16th inning as the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the San Diego Padres to earn a 5-3 victory Wednesday in the longest game over the past two seasons.

It was the first game to go at least 14 innings since the start of the 2020 season, when MLB started putting an automatic runner at second base to begin extra innings. Both teams were also the first to not score in any of the first four extra innings in that time.

Pollock's blast to center field off Padres left-hander Daniel Camarena (0-1) was his 16th homer of the season. It also brought home Justin Turner, who started the inning on second.

After five scoreless extra innings, the Dodgers took a 3-1 lead in the 15th on RBI singles from pinch hitter Billy McKinney and Trea Turner. The Padres tied it in their half of the 15th on a two-run home run from Fernando Tatis Jr., who had been 0-for-6 with four strikeouts to that point.

The Padres did not have a hit for nine consecutive innings until Tatis socked his 35th home run of the season.

Will Smith belted a game-tying home run in the eighth inning for the Dodgers, who won for the 11th time in their past 12 games and improved to 15-2 since Aug. 7.

Wil Myers had an RBI infield single in the second inning for the Padres, who have dropped the opening two games of the three-game series and are 2-11 since Aug. 11.

Dodgers pitchers issued a major league record eight intentional walks, mostly to reach the pitcher's spot after the Padres ran out of bench players in the 10th inning.

Both starters pitched well but had nothing to show for their efforts.

Padres starter Blake Snell gave up one run while finishing with career highs in innings pitched (7 2/3) and pitches (122). He struck out 10 and walked none.

Dodgers starter Walker Buehler yielded one run, which was unearned, on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. He fanned eight and walked one.

Corey Knebel (4-0) earned the victory despite giving up Tatis' home run. Shane Greene pitched the 16th inning to earn his first save since 2019.

The teams combined to go 7-for-51 with runners in scoring position, 5-for-27 for Los Angeles, 2-for-24 for San Diego.
