Jurickson Profar snapped a tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning Friday night as the host San Diego Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-2.

The Giants loaded the bases with one out in the seventh on a Mauricio Dubon single and back-to-walks by Padres starter Yu Darvish, but reliever Tim Hill struck out two with the bases loaded after Giants pinch hitter Darin Ruf came within inches of a grand slam.

Ruf hit a high, opposite-field drive down the right field foul line. First base umpire Ryan Additon first called the ball fair for a grand slam, but the crew led by CB Bucknor met and ruled the ball foul. A Giants appeal was denied by the league office, as the ball slid inches outside the foul pole. Hill then struck out Ruf and Mike Tauchman to end the inning.

The Giants again loaded the bases in the eighth, this time with no outs, but scored only one run. Evan Longoria grounded into a double play that cut the deficit to 3-2 before Dubon grounded out.

San Francisco also failed to score with runners at second and third and one out in the fifth and with a runner at second and none out in the sixth. From the fifth inning on, the Giants were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the first on Buster Posey's sixth homer of the season. The Padres tied the game in the bottom of the first when Trent Grisham doubled and scored from second on Eric Hosmer's two-out infield single off the glove of second baseman Tommy La Stella.

Hosmer led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and moved to third on Jake Cronenworth's double into the right field corner. After Wil Myers was retired on a comebacker, Giants starter Logan Webb threw two strikes to Profar. The left fielder then lined the third pitch from the right-hander to center for the game-winning hit.

Darvish (3-1) picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Mark Melancon picked up his ninth save with a perfect ninth, lowering his ERA to 0.69.

Webb (1-2) surrendered three runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings.
