Rhys Hoskins hit two homers to lift the visiting Philadelphia Phillies over the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 Monday.

Zack Wheeler (2-2) held the Cardinals to one hit in eight-plus innings. He allowed the one run and struck out nine batters.

Hector Neris relieved him in the ninth inning to earn his fourth save.

Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (0-3) threw a complete game in defeat. He allowed six hits and struck out eight batters.

The pitching duel took shape quickly.

Wainwright breezed through the first three innings, striking out five batters and coaxing a double-play grounder after allowing his first hit.

Phillies outfielder Brad Miller led off the fourth inning with a single to left, but Hoskins lined into a double play as Wainwright kept the game moving.

Wheeler met that pitching challenge, retiring the first 14 hitters he faced -- seven by strikeout.

Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto lined a single to left leading off the fifth inning. He moved to second base on Alec Bohm's hit-and-run groundout, but Odubel Herrera flied out to strand him.

The Cardinals finally got a baserunner in their half of the inning with Paul DeJong's two-out single. But Wheeler got Tyler O'Neill to hit an inning-ending popup.

Justin Williams walked leading off the sixth inning against Wheeler, but Wainwright bunted into a double play.

Hoskins blasted his first homer leading off the seventh inning to put the Phillies up 1-0. Realmuto hit a one-out single, but Wainwright escaped the inning without further damage.

Hoskins' second homer, in the ninth inning, just cleared the center-field wall.

Wheeler walked pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter to lead off the ninth inning. That prompted manager Joe Girardi to summon Neris to close out the game.

Tommy Edman greeted Neris with a base hit that advanced Carpenter to third base. Dylan Carlson grounded out to score Carpenter and move Edman to second base.

But Paul Goldschmidt popped out and Nolan Arenado flew out to end the game.
