Gary Sanchez capped a four-run first inning with a three-run homer and the New York Yankees ran their winning streak over the Baltimore Orioles to 16 games with a 6-5 victory Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees finished the season series 17-2, their most wins against any opponent in a single season since going 17-5 against the Kansas City Athletics in 1959. New York's 16-game winning streak is its longest against an opponent in a season since winning 21 straight over the St. Louis Browns in 1927.

Sanchez hit his 10th homer against the Orioles when he drove a 2-0 changeup from Dylan Bundy (5-13) over the center field fence and on top of the netting above Monument Park. It was his 26th homer of the season and New York's 61st against Baltimore, extending the major league record for homers against one opponent in a season.

Sanchez also joined Gleyber Torres as the second Yankees hitter to reach double-digit homers against Baltimore. Torres has 13 and he and Sanchez joined Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth as the second pair of Yankees to hit double-digit homers against one opponent. Gehrig and Ruth hit 11 apiece against the Boston Red Sox in 1927.

Didi Gregorius had a game-tying RBI single as the Yankees won for the 14th time in their last 16 games overall. The Yankees moved a season-high 40 games over .500 to 81-41.

Mike Ford added a two-run single in the sixth.

J.A. Happ (10-7) allowed two runs on six hits in five innings to become New York's second double-digit winner. He did not allow a homer for the first time in six starts, struck out six and walked three.

Jonathan Villar hit an RBI single five batters into the first and Pedro Severino had an RBI single in the third for the Orioles. Renato Nunez collected a career-best five hits and added a two-run double in the seventh off Luis Cessa.

Villar also had an RBI single in the seventh off Adam Ottavino to make it a one-run game. Ottavino struck out pinch hitter Chance Sisco to end the seventh and Zack Britton pitched a scoreless eighth for the Yankees.

Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth and converted his 33rd save in 38 opportunities.

Bundy allowed six runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He retired 16 of 17 hitters after Sanchez went deep but was knocked out after allowing consecutive two-out hits to Sanchez and Torres.

The Orioles lost for the ninth time in 10 games and allowed their 250th homer, extending the American League record. Baltimore is eight away from matching the all-time record set by the Cincinnati Reds in 2016.
