James McCann had three hits and drove in three runs against his former team, Ivan Nova pitched eight scoreless innings and the Chicago White Sox pounded the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Wednesday.

Nova (7-9) scattered five hits, walked three and struck out one.

Jose Abreu had three hits, scored twice and drove in two more for the White Sox while Tim Anderson reached base five times, including four hits, and scored three runs. Ryan Cordell added his sixth homer of the season.

The White Sox took three of four from the Tigers during the series. Detroit has lost six of its past seven games.

Detroit's Tyler Alexander (0-3), making his fifth career start, gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings while striking out six. Utility man Brandon Dixon tossed a scoreless ninth inning. Travis Demeritte's RBI triple with two out in the ninth prevented a shutout.

Chicago scored a run in the first. Anderson reached on an infield single and advanced on Abreu's base hit. With two out, McCann blooped a double to center to bring in Anderson.

Cordell's 450-foot blast to left center with two down in the second made it 2-0. It was just one of Chicago's 15 hits on the day.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the second but Jordy Mercer grounded into a double play, ending the inning.

The White Sox scored an unearned run in the third. Anderson reached on another infield single and moved to second when shortstop Mercer misplayed McCann's two-out grounder. Welington Castillo then knocked in Anderson with a double.

Chicago stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Anderson singled again and Abreu ripped a run-scoring double to left. One out later, McCann brought home Abreu with a single.

Demeritte led off the bottom of the inning with a single but another double play prevented the Tigers from a chance to score.

The White Sox tacked on a two-out run in the sixth on consecutive singles by Leury Garcia, Anderson and Abreu.

RBI singles by Eloy Jimenez and McCann upped the White Sox's advantage to 8-0 in the eighth.
