Austin Romine and Didi Gregorius hit two-run home runs off Chris Sale as the New York Yankees beat the host Boston Red Sox 9-6 on Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep.

Gio Urshela, Cameron Maybin and Edwin Encarnacion had two hits apiece as the Yankees put behind them being outscored 38-13 through the first three games of the series. Domingo German got his 13th win to tie for the American League lead, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings and matching his season high with nine strikeouts.

German (13-2) ended a winless run for Yankees starters who, as a group, had a 16.62 ERA over their previous seven games. In that span, New York allowed seven or more runs in each contest, a franchise-worst streak.

Andrew Benintendi hit a two-run homer and had four RBIs for the Red Sox, who failed to reach eight runs against the Yankees for the first time in their last seven meetings.

German and Sale combined to strike out seven over the first two innings before New York got to the Boston left-hander in the third. After Jackie Bradley Jr. robbed Urshela of a leadoff hit with a running catch in center, Maybin walked and Romine put one over the Green Monster in left-center for a 2-0 lead.

Gregorius doubled the advantage to 4-0 with his shot to right field in the fourth, but Benintendi countered with his two-run blast in the bottom of the inning.

New York knocked out Sale in the sixth with Urshela's RBI double, and Maybin added a run-scoring single off Colten Brewer to give the Yankees a 6-2 margin. After Boston scored on a groundout in the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees, assisted by a Bradley Jr. error, tallied two in the seventh to go up 8-3.

The Red Sox and Yankees then traded runs over the next inning before Boston got within three on a two-out, two-run Benintendi single off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth. However, Chapman struck out Michael Chavis to end the game on the next at-bat.

Sale (5-10) gave up six runs on five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven.
