Jacob deGrom tossed seven scoreless innings for the second straight start Thursday afternoon, when he struck out nine and earned the win as the host New York Mets earned a 4-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.

The Mets scored all their runs in the first inning in winning two of the three games in the series. The Padres are 3-9 since the All-Star break.

The Mets still might have absorbed a loss in the ninth inning, when closer Edwin Diaz was struck on the foot by a line drive off the bat of the only batter he faced, Manny Machado. Diaz did walk off the field under his own power.

Relying on a high-90s fastball and a 92-mph slider, DeGrom (6-7) allowed four hits and one walk while allowing the Padres to get just one runner into scoring position. After Machado singled with two outs in the first, one of his three hits on the day, deGrom retired 12 consecutive before Francisco Mejia's two-out single in the fifth.

The Padres mustered their lone threat against deGrom in the sixth, when pinch-hitter Greg Garcia drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a two-out single by Machado before Eric Hosmer flew out to center.

DeGrom, who didn't factor into the decision in the Mets' 1-0, 10-inning loss to the San Francisco Giants on Friday, has allowed just one run over his last three starts, a span of 19 innings. He has a 2.36 ERA in his last 15 starts dating back to May 1 to lower his overall ERA to 2.86.

The Mets ensured deGrom wouldn't get another hard-luck no-decision in the first inning, when J.D. Davis drew a one-out walk against Eric Lauer (5-8), went to third on a single by Pete Alonso and scored on Wilson Ramos' sacrifice fly.

Robinson Cano followed with a single before he and Alonso scored on Todd Frazier's double. Frazier raced home on Michael Conforto's single.

Conforto, Davis, Frazier and Juan Lagares all had two hits apiece.

Lauer allowed the four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one over a season-low 2 1/3 innings.
