Christian Vazquez hit a two-run, two-out home run in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Boston Red Sox came back to defeat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 Friday night.

The ninth homer of the season by Vazquez came against Jordan Romano (0-1), who had pitched around a walk and struck out three in the ninth before striking out the first two batters in the 10th. However, he then hit Marco Hernandez with a pitch to keep the inning alive for Vazquez.

Brandon Workman (6-1) pitched around a walk, a stolen base and an intentional walk in the top of the 10th to earn the win.

Randal Grichuk homered and had three hits and three RBIs for the Blue Jays, who led 5-1 before the Red Sox rallied with three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Boston starter Chris Sale allowed four runs (three earned), seven hits and two walks in five innings. The left-hander struck out eight.

Toronto starter Trent Thornton gave up two runs, eight hits and one walk while striking out seven in 6 1/3 innings.

The Blue Jays scored twice in the first. Eric Sogard singled and stole second. Teoscar Hernandez and Grichuk walked with two outs, and Freddy Galvis hit a two-run single.

Grichuk hit his 14th homer of the season in the third after Hernandez reached base on an error by third baseman Eduardo Nunez.

Brock Holt hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third after singles by Andrew Benintendi and J.D. Martinez, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

Starting with Holt's sacrifice fly, Thornton retired nine in a row before allowing singles to Holt and Michael Chavis with one out in the sixth. Thornton worked out of the inning with no damage.

In the seventh, Boston's Colten Brewer allowed a one-out walk to Hernandez, who took second on wild pitch and scored on Grichuk's single.

Mookie Betts tripled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Tim Mayza replaced Thornton and allowed Benintendi's RBI single. Joe Biagini replaced Mayza and gave up an RBI double to Xander Bogaerts, who took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Martinez that cut the margin to 5-4.

Jackie Bradley Jr. tripled with one out in the eighth against David Phelps. Pinch hitter Rafael Devers, who did not start because of a hamstring injury, followed with an RBI single.
