Domingo German and four relievers combined on a two-hitter and the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Monday night at Yankee Stadium after putting two more players on the injured list.

The Yankees rebounded from consecutive losses to the Baltimore Orioles after putting Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list with a strained left biceps and Miguel Andujar on the injured list with a strained right shoulder.

Gary Sanchez and Brett Gardner hit solo homers while Luke Voit scored on a single by Greg Bird following a fielding error by left fielder Christin Stewart.

German (1-0) overcame control problems and pitched through frigid conditions as the game-time temperature was announced at 45 when he threw his first pitch to Josh Harrison.

He was originally supposed to pitch at "some point" Monday with the Yankees considering using an "opener" but that plan was scratched after Sunday's 7-5 loss.

In his 15th career start, German worked around a career-high five walks and held the Tigers to an unearned run and one hit in five innings.

Chad Green, Zack Britton, and Adam Ottavino pitched a scoreless inning apiece. Aroldis Chapman needed only seven pitches in a perfect ninth and recorded his first save.

The Tigers were held to one run or less for the third time in their first five games. Detroit also failed to score more than four runs in any of its first five games for the first time since 2003.

Detroit's lone run occurred in the fourth when Stewart scored on a throwing error by Sanchez after advancing to third on a wild pitch.

Tyson Ross (0-1) made his Detroit debut, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings.

Sanchez made it 1-0 by homering on to the loading dock area beyond the left-center field fence to start the second. The Yankees took a 2-0 lead when Bird hit a bloop single to left that deflected off Stewart's glove.

After Detroit got a run back in the fourth, Gardner homered over the right-center fence to lead off the fifth. The Tigers threatened in the eighth when the first two hitters walked, but Aaron Judge made a diving catch on Niko Goodrum's sinking liner and Ottavino induced two more flyouts.
