Kevin Newman singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to help the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates earn a 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

Newman hit the first pitch he saw from reliever Jacob Webb (1-2) to drive in Ben Gamel, who began the inning as the runner at second base. The Pirates added another run on Gregory Polanco's sacrifice fly.

The Braves were retired in order by Richard Rodriguez in the bottom of the 10th. Rodriguez (3-0) worked two innings and retired all six batters he faced.

The Pirates broke a six-game losing streak to the Braves in Atlanta and won for the first time in four games overall. Pittsburgh improved to 3-1 in extra-inning games, while Atlanta fell to 1-5.

Neither starter was part of the decision in the opener of a four-game series.

Atlanta's Drew Smyly posted his third straight quality start, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Pittsburgh's Wil Crowe worked five-plus innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

The Pirates bullpen worked five scoreless innings and allowed only one hit and no walks.

Pittsburgh's Adam Frazier was 4-for-5 to lift his average to .339. Frazier has gone 32-for-83 (.386) in his past 20 games. He has a major-league-leading 58 hits.

The Pirates got a two-run homer from Jacob Stallings in the first inning, but Atlanta took a 3-2 lead in the second when William Contreras answered with a three-run shot to left.

The Braves missed a chance to break the game open in the fourth inning. They loaded the bases, but Crowe struck out Freddie Freeman on an off-speed pitch to end the threat.

The Pirates evened the score in the sixth when Bryan Reynolds lined a leadoff homer to straightaway center field, only to have the Braves regain the lead in the bottom of the inning on Dansby Swanson's long leadoff homer to left.

Pittsburgh tied the game at 4-4 when Frazier lined a two-out single to center that scored Gamel, who had singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.
