Kevin Newman drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates rallied for a 3-2 win against the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of the three-game series on Friday night.

Newman also homered, Bryan Reynolds had three hits and a walk, and Adam Frazier had two hits for the Pirates, who have won seven of their past eight.

Ben Gamel had two hits for the Brewers, who have lost eight of 11.

Pittsburgh starter Chris Archer went four innings, allowing two runs and three hits, striking out six and walking two.

Milwaukee's Jeremy Jeffress (1-2) took over in the ninth and walked Elias Diaz with one out, then gave up a single to pinch hitter Jose Osuna, moving Diaz to third. Newman grounded to first and beat the double-play throw to bring in Diaz for a 3-2 lead.

Milwaukee starter Jhoulys Chacin was in position to earn his first win in six decisions before reliever Junior Guerra gave up the tying run in the eighth.

He walked Reynolds to lead off the inning. Reynolds moved to second on a single by Starling Marte and to third on a fielder's choice by Josh Bell before scoring the tying run on another fielder's choice hit by Colin Moran.

Chacin allowed one run and six hits, struck out four and walked two in his bid for his first win since April 30 against the visiting Colorado Rockies.

The Brewers scored their two runs in the first inning.

Yasmani Grandal led off with a walk before Archer got the next two batters out. Lorenzo Cain doubled to right to put runners on second and third and Grandal scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Eric Thames followed with another double to bring home Cain and make it 2-0.

The Pirates got a run back on a solo home run by Newman in the third to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Brewers also put their leadoff batter on in the second and fourth innings, but both were thrown out stealing.
