The Boston Red Sox took advantage of a dropped pop fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 Thursday night at Fenway Park.

The Blue Jays (65-81) had tied the game at 3 in the top of the eighth on Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s solo home run and the ensuing rally that included two hit batters, the second with the bases loaded.

Xander Bogaerts doubled against Danny Barnes (3-3) with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Bogaerts then stole third to force the infield in. Blake Swihart hit a pop fly that second baseman Yangervis Solarte dropped for an error that allowed Bogaerts to score the go-ahead run.

J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers hit solo home runs for the Red Sox (101-46), who swept the three-game set and won the season series 15-4 against the Blue Jays.

Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez struck out seven in six innings, allowing one run and five hits without a walk.

Red Sox right-handed reliever Brandon Workman (5-0) pitched one-third of an inning to get the win, and Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 40th save of the season.

Toronto starter Sam Gaviglio allowed two runs, six hits and one walk while striking out one in 3 1/3 innings.

Martinez led off the bottom of the second with his 41st homer of the season.

The Blue Jays scored in the third. Gurriel singled with one out, took second on a groundout to the pitcher by Solarte and scored on a single by Justin Smoak.

The Red Sox regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Jackie Bradley Jr. led off with a double, took third on a groundout to shortstop by Andrew Benintendi and scored on Ian Kinsler's sacrifice fly.

Jose Fernandez replaced Gaviglio with one out in the fourth and Devers at second base. Devers was running for Eduardo Nunez, who had doubled. Nunez has a sore right knee and is listed as day-to-day.

Fernandez pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings before Mark Leiter Jr. replaced him and struck out three consecutive batters before allowing the 17th home run of the season by Devers with two outs in the sixth.

Boston's Bobby Poyner gave up Gurriel's eighth homer of the season with one out in the eighth. Joe Kelly replaced Poyner with two outs and walked Smoak on four pitches. Jonathan Davis ran for Smoak and took second on a single by Kendrys Morales, with Dwight Smith Jr. entering to pinch-run for Morales. Kelly hit Randal Grichuk and Kevin Pillar with pitches to force in the tying run. Workman replaced Kelly to end the inning on a strikeout.
