Kevin Smith hit his first major league home run, Jose Berrios tossed seven dominant innings and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays downed the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Sunday.

Bo Bichette also homered for Toronto among three hits. Berrios (9-7) only allowed an unearned run while striking out 11.

Tim Mayza got the last four outs to collect his first career save.

Harold Castro had an RBI single for the Tigers.

Detroit starter Matthew Boyd (3-7), making his first start since coming off the 60-day injured list, gave up two runs on four hits and struck out five in four innings.

Bichette gave the Blue Jays a quick lead with his one-out homer in the first, an opposite-field shot. Toronto had two more baserunners in the inning but Boyd struck out Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to limit the damage.

Toronto had another threat going in the third when Marcus Semien walked and Bichette singled. Boyd got out of that jam on two flyouts and a strikeout.

Smith's 397-foot homer cleared the wall in left-center field with two out in the fourth.

Detroit threatened in the bottom of the inning when Miguel Cabrera reached on a two-out error and Jeimer Candelario singled. Berrios escaped the jam by retiring Castro on a fly ball.

Berrios recorded three strikeouts in the fifth, including Akil Baddoo after Victor Reyes hit a two-out double.

Detroit broke through in the sixth. Jonathan Schoop reached on an error and moved to third on Robbie Grossman's double. Berrios set down the next two batters on a fielder's choice and strikeout before Castro smacked a single to right.

The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the seventh on two singles and a walk. Reliever Jose Cisnero escaped the jam by setting down Teoscar Hernandez on a short fly and getting Alejandro Kirk to bounce into a double play.

Toronto took two of three games from the Tigers during the weekend series after losing two of three at home to Detroit last weekend.
