Yankees 10, Red Sox 3: Alfonso Soriano continued his tear with a home run and four RBIs as visiting New York took the series opener from Boston.

Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer among three RBIs in his Yankees debut and Andy Pettitte (8-9) allowed three unearned runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Soriano improved to 13-for-18 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in the last four contests - tying a major-league record for most runs batted in during a four-game span - as New York picked up its fifth win in six games.

Felix Doubront (8-6) suffered the brunt of the damage, allowing seven runs (six earned) and eight hits in four innings as the Red Sox had their lead in the American League East trimmed to one game over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Soriano got the Yankees on the board with an RBI single in the first and Reynolds, who was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Indians earlier this week, blasted a two-run homer in his first at-bat with his new team to make it a 3-0 cushion in the second inning.

Soriano came up with two on in the third and sent a deep blast over the Green Monster in left-center to extend the lead. Boston threatened to come back with a pair of runs in the seventh but New York put it away with three runs in the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Pinch-hitter Mike Carp was called out on strikes to end Boston’s rally in the seventh and slammed his helmet down as he was angrily turning toward home plate umpire Bill Welke. He was quickly ejected. … Reynolds had not homered since June 28 with the Indians. The Yankees optioned RHP Preston Claiborne to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated INF Luis Cruz for assignment to clear a roster spot for Reynolds. … Soriano added a stolen base and an outfield assist to go along with his three hits and two runs scored. He has recorded at least three hits in each of the last four games.
