Jon Lester pitched seven dominant innings as the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees 7-3 at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

Lester (19-8), who won his sixth consecutive start, allowed just two hits in the game. He retired the first 12 batters he faced and struck out eight while walking three.

The Red Sox, who trail the Yankees by 5.5 games in the wild-card standings, scored three times in the third inning off Yankees starter Ivan Nova (1-1). Marco Scutaro and David Ortiz had RBI singles in the frame before Ortiz made it 4-0 in the fifth with another RBI single.

The Yankees, who have lost four straight, ended Lester’s no-hit bid with one out in the sixth inning on a line drive by Francisco Cervelli that eluded the grasp of diving left fielder Daniel Nava. Derek Jeter then followed with clean single to left but Nava fielded the ball cleanly and threw out Austin Kearns trying to score from second base.

Boston put the game away in the seventh on back-to-back homers by J.D. Drew and Victor Martinez.

Curtis Granderson hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Alex Rodriguez hit a solo shot in the ninth for the Yankees.
