John Gant threw six scoreless innings Saturday as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the visiting Cincinnati Reds 2-0.

Gant (1-2) struck out five batters and allowed just three hits and two walks as the Cardinals handed the Reds their sixth consecutive loss.

Genesis Cabrera worked the seventh inning for the Cardinals and Giovanny Gallegos closed out the last two innings to earn his first save.

Reds starting pitcher Wade Miley (2-2) pitched well in defeat, allowing the two runs on five hits and two walks.

The Cardinals scored the only run they would need in the first inning.

Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson led off with singles. After Paul Goldschmidt grounded into a forceout, Nolan Arenado lined an RBI single into right field to put the Cardinals up 1-0.

Wiley settled down to retire Paul DeJong on a groundout and Tyler O'Neill on a liner to left field.

O'Neill reached on an error with one out in the fourth inning and moved up on a groundout. Justin Williams walked, but Gant grounded out to end the inning.

Gant breezed through his first five innings while holding the Reds to one hit and two walks.

The Reds finally threatened in the sixth inning on one-out singles by Jesse Winker and Nicholas Castellanos. But Gant stranded the runners as Joey Votto flied out and Eugenio Suarez grounded out.

Miley retired the first two batters in the bottom of the inning, but O'Neill walked and Andrew Knizner lifted an RBI double off the left field wall to double the Cardinals' lead to 2-0.

Williams reached on an error, but Miley coaxed an inning-ending grounder from pinch-hitter Austin Dean to prevent further damage.

The Cardinals threatened again in the seventh inning against reliever Sal Romano. Carlson hit a one-out single and raced to third on Goldschmidt's hit-and-run single.

But Romano got Arenado to ground into an inning-ending double play.
