Preview Roundups
December 19, 2014
Utah at Orlando 7:00 PM ET
The road-weary Orlando Magic open a four-game homestand when they entertain the Utah Jazz on Friday. The home contest will be only the 10th all season for Orlando, which has played a league-high 19 road games. “Hopefully we can go home and focus on the task at hand,” Magic coach Jacque Vaughn told reporters. “We have to protect our home floor and at the same time we’ve got to get better in some areas that will give us a chance to do so.”
Charlotte at Philadelphia 7:00 PM ET
If the Philadelphia 76ers are going to snap their long home losing streak, they may not get a better chance than when the Charlotte Hornets visit Friday. The 76ers, off since a Monday home loss to Boston, are 0-13 at Wells Fargo Center this season and are six losses shy from matching the NBA record set by Dallas back in 1993-94. The Hornets are an NBA-worst 1-10 on the road and have lost their last six road contests.
Minnesota at Boston 7:30 PM ET
The Boston Celtics begin a new era Friday at home against Minnesota without star point guard Rajon Rondo, who was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for three players and two draft picks on Thursday night. Rondo, who is set to be a free agent this summer, finishes a dynamic eight-plus seasons with the Celtics that featured one NBA title and four All-Star nods. His last three seasons have been marked by injuries and a lack of support, prompting Boston to continue to rebuild without him.
Brooklyn at Cleveland 7:30 PM ET
The Cleveland Cavaliers look to bounce back from their most lopsided defeat of the season when they host the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. The Cavaliers had a six-game home winning streak snapped with a 127-98 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday and have dropped three of four following an eight-game winning streak. The Nets have dropped two straight and five of their last seven following a 105-89 loss at Toronto on Wednesday.
Toronto at Detroit 7:30 PM ET
The Toronto Raptors look to continue their winning ways when they hit the road to face the Detroit Pistons. The Raptors are off to their best start in franchise history and the current squad became the first to win 20 games before Christmas as they hope to extend their unbeaten streak to five games. Toronto holds a comfortable nine-game lead at the top of the Atlantic Division after downing Brooklyn 105-89 on Wednesday and turns it attention to beating the Pistons for the fourth straight time.
Washington at Miami 7:30 PM ET
Dwyane Wade looks like he’s in peak form, he’s just not getting much help from the rest of his battered and bruised teammates. The Miami Heat will try to avoid back-to-back losses when they host the red-hot Washington Wizards on Friday. The Wizards are winners of five straight and nine of 10, including a 21-point home blowout of Miami on Dec. 1, in which they buried 10-of-19 from 3-point range.
Chicago at Memphis 8:00 PM ET
After pulling off an exhilarating triple-overtime victory in San Antonio, the Memphis Grizzlies look to extend their winning streak to seven games when they host the Chicago Bulls on Friday. Memphis prevailed 117-116 on Wednesday in a wild game against the Spurs and look to avoid an emotional hangover against Chicago. The Bulls posted a 103-97 victory over the New York Knicks on Thursday and might be missing Derrick Rose (virus) for the second straight contest.
Portland at San Antonio 8:00 PM ET
The San Antonio Spurs will try to bounce back after an exhausting loss when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. The Spurs dropped a 117-116 triple-overtime decision to Memphis on Wednesday and now play their third game in a stretch of 11 straight against teams with non-losing records. Portland, winners of three straight, is in the midst of a tough stretch of its own, going 5-2 so far during a stretch of playing nine of 11 games on the road.
L.A. Clippers at Denver 9:00 PM ET
The Los Angeles Clippers are doing a lot more winning than losing lately and they’ll try to continue that trend Friday at the Denver Nuggets. The Clippers have won 11 of 13 after a ho-hum 5-4 start and are playing the fourth of five straight games and 11 of 12 against teams that began Thursday at .500 or below. The Nuggets have lost three straight and seven of eight, putting them on the verge of falling six games under .500 for the first time this season.
Oklahoma City at L.A. Lakers 10:30 PM ET
The Los Angeles Lakers looked surprisingly frisky during a three-game winning streak as the team helped push Kobe Bryant into third on the all-time scoring list. The high from that accomplishment dropped off in a big way at Indiana on Monday, and the Lakers will look to avoid back-to-back losses when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. The Thunder are hoping to have Kevin Durant available after he was forced to leave early on Thursday with an ankle injury.
