That is, until Scherzer exited with neck spasms and the Nationals frittered away the lead, allowing the host Miami Marlins to rally for the victory and have a chance for a series win in Wednesday's rubber match.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are running away with the National League West thanks in part to a pitching staff that has smothered opposing offenses, and enter the middle contest of a three-game series Wednesday at the Atlanta Braves off another outstanding game from their hurlers. Kenta Maeda and three relievers combined to allow only two runs on four hits as Los Angeles captured Tuesday’s series opener 3-2, winning its ninth game in a row and improving to 40-6 since June 7.

The Seattle Mariners are a season-best two games above .500 for the second time this campaign as they look to complete a three-game sweep of the host Texas Rangers on Wednesday. The Mariners registered 14 runs while winning the first two games of the set and are searching for their fifth consecutive victory.

Evan Longoria looks to follow up a historic night when the Tampa Bay Rays visit the American League-best Houston Astros on Wednesday night for the third of a four-game series. Longoria became the second player in Rays history to hit for the cycle Tuesday when he went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in a 6-4 victory and became the franchise leader in runs scored with 766, passing Carl Crawford.

Manny Pina has been heating up of late and aims to continue his torrid play when the Milwaukee Brewers host the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday for the middle contest of their three-game set. The 30-year-old Venezuelan recorded an RBI double to cap a three-run first inning in Tuesday's series-opening 3-2 victory, improving to 9-for-23 with a homer, three RBIs and as many runs scored in his last seven games.

The Colorado Rockies showed character in the series opener and look to strengthen their hold on a wild-card spot in the National League when they host the New York Mets on Wednesday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Colorado began its six-game homestand with a see-saw battle on Tuesday that resulted in a walk-off victory thanks to Nolan Arenado's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Albert Pujols takes a swing at tying Sammy Sosa for eighth place on the all-time home run list when the Los Angeles Angels host the Philadelphia Phillies in the middle contest of their three-game series on Wednesday. Pujols belted a three-run shot for career blast No. 608 during Tuesday's 7-1 victory.

The San Francisco Giants salvaged the finale of their five-game road trip and hope to begin a winning streak Wednesday against the visiting Oakland Athletics as the Bay Bridge Series shifts to AT&T Park for two contests. San Francisco ended its four-game slide in a big way Tuesday, erupting for five runs in the first inning and rolling to a 10-4 victory.
