John Tavares had a goal and two assists for the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs in a 5-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Nazem Kadri scored two goals to give him seven in the past nine games, Morgan Rielly had a goal and an assist and Frederik Andersen made 22 saves for the Maple Leafs, who improved to 7-1-0 on the road this season.

Adrian Kempe scored, and Peter Budaj made 15 saves on 19 shots in his first start for the Kings this season. He was replaced by rookie Cal Petersen after allowing the fourth goal at 4:33 of the second period. Petersen stopped 15 of 16 shots in his NHL debut.

The Maple Leafs went 3-for-6 on the power play to move from sixth in the league to fourth in efficiency (28.3 percent).

Tavares and Kadri scored power-play goals in the first period to give Toronto a 2-0 lead.

Mitch Marner passed the puck from the left circle to Kadri in the right circle, and his one-timer beat Budaj nearside for a 1-0 lead at 2:42. Marner also assisted on Kadri's second goal.

The Kings still did not have a shot on goal when Tavares deflected a point shot from Rielly to make it 2-0 at 6:12.

Tavares has a goal in three straight games and 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in eight road games this season.

Kempe redirected Dion Phaneuf's shot between the pads of Andersen to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 14:28 of the first period. The goal ended a 129-minute scoreless streak for the Kings.

Rielly re-established a two-goal lead at 1:15 of the second period, scoring his eighth goal of the season and 23rd point, which leads the Maple Leafs and is tops among NHL defensemen.

Andreas Johnsson chased Budaj with his second goal of the season.

Petersen entered, and 65 seconds later Los Angeles forward Alex Iafallo received a double-minor high-sticking penalty. Petersen made five saves on the four-minute power play, but Kadri slid one by him for a 5-1 lead at 7:19.
