Sebastian Aho and Micheal Ferland each provided a goal and an assist as the visiting Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 on Friday night.

The outcome gave first-year coach Rod Brind'Amour his first victory in his second game in charge behind the bench. Brind'Amour is a former team captain who moved up from an assistant coaching role during the offseason.

Aho scored 6:33 into the second period to break a 1-1 tie. Ferland scored in the third period, marking his first goal with the team.

Jordan Martinook also scored for Carolina, which was coming off an overtime loss to the New York Islanders in its season opener.

Brandon Dubinsky scored his first goal of the season for Columbus.

Goalie Curtis McElhinney, who was claimed off waivers earlier in the week from Toronto, stopped 31 shots for the Hurricanes. He made nine saves in the third period in his debut with Carolina.

Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves. He was making his season debut after not playing the previous night in an overtime victory at Detroit.

The Blue Jackets were called for only one penalty -- coming in the third period -- but they didn't take advantage of even-strength situations.

Martinook scored just 1:43 into the game for the Hurricanes, whose only goal a night earlier in the opener came in the final two minutes after the goalie had been pulled.

Andrei Svechnikov assisted on the goal, with the 18-year-old become the third-youngest player in franchise history to record a point. He began the scoring sequence by collecting a turnover and heading up ice while controlling the puck.

Dubinsky tied the score with a goal off a rebound with 7:02 left in the opening period.

Columbus fell to 7-8-3 all time in home openers. Dating to last season, the Blue Jackets are 9-2-1 in their last 12 regular-season home games.

Ten of the 15 most recent meetings between the teams had been decided by one goal or less.
