SUNRISE, Fla. -- Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo admitted he lost his temper.

New York Islanders Jaroslav Halak said he was frustrated.

In the end, Panthers rookie Denis Malgin scored at 4:14 of overtime as Florida defeated New York 3-2 on Saturday night at the BB&T Center.

Halak was more upset with the Panthers' second goal, which snuck under his left pad with 13.6 seconds left in regulation.

That goal by Jonathan Marchessault kept the Islanders from earning what would have been their first road win of the season. New York led 2-1 at the time, but Florida pulled Luongo to get an extra attacker.

"That second goal shouldn't have gone in," said Halak, who made 40 saves. "That's on me. It's frustrating to play a pretty solid game and then give up a bad goal at the end of regulation."

The overtime goal by the 19-year-old rookie Malgin came after he redirected a point shot by Vincent Trocheck. It was Malgin's third goal of the season.

Luongo, who made 19 saves, snapped in the second period when he went after Islanders Brock Nelson, who slashed him.

"I kind of lost it there," Luongo said. "I needed to let off some steam. It was a tough game the way it was going -- the bounces and the calls. But good teams overcome adversity."

The Panthers (7-7-1) did just that in a game in which they mostly dominated the Islanders (5-7-3), but still trailed 2-0 after two periods.

Florida's first goal was produced by 24-year-old rookie center Kyle Rau -- the first score of his NHL career. The Panthers also had another goal disallowed -- twice on the same play.

For New York, Nelson scored one goal and nearly another.

Nelson scored in the first period and was initially credited with a second goal in the second period, when the puck appeared to glance off his body. The ruling was later changed, and Nick Leddy was given credit for the goal.

But in the end, it was not enough, and the Islanders are 0-4-1 on the road this season.

"It's like a bad dream right now," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Our guys can't catch a break."

The Islanders, who entered the weekend tied for 26th place on the penalty kill with a 75.9 percentage, seemed to at least fix those issues against Florida as they were 4 for 4 killing off Panthers power plays.

Luongo got emotional in the second period when Nelson nearly scored again on a 5-on-3 power play. That's when Nelson was called for slashing Luongo, who went after his tormentor.

With Nelson in the penalty box, Florida put a puck in the net on a wrist shot from the point by Aaron Ekblad with 5:07 left in the second period.

The play was immediately waved off, however, as the officials ruled interference on Jaromir Jagr, who made contact with Halak just before the puck arrived.

That touched a crazy sequence. On a review, it was called a good goal. But on a coach's challenge by Capuano, the goal was waved off.

Florida finally got on the scoreboard with 11:04 left in the third period as Rau followed his own shot and scored on a bad angle, below the left circle, bouncing the puck off the back of Halak.

"I spun around and shot was lucky enough to get the rebound," Rau said. "Then I just banked it in off of (Halak)."

The Rau goal sparked the Panthers' comeback -- and more misery for the Islanders.
