Blues 3, Avalanche 1: Jaden Schwartz collected a goal and an assist while Alex Steen and captain David Backes extended their respective point streaks as host St. Louis entered the All-Star break on a 7-0-1 run.
T.J. Oshie and defenseman Carl Gunnarsson also tallied while Brian Elliott made 17 saves for the Blues, who improved to 5-0-1 on their season-high seven-game homestand and moved within two points of Central Division-leading Nashville. Steen notched two assists to increase his point streak to 10 games and Backes also set up a goal to run his career-high point stretch to seven.
Matt Duchene scored for the Avalanche, who finished 1-2-2 on their five-game road trip after losing the fourth time in five meetings with St. Louis. Semyon Varlamov turned aside 27 shots in the setback.
Steen skated up the left wing before sliding the puck to Schwartz, who followed up his initial shot from the near faceoff circle and beat Varlamov during a power play 32 seconds into the middle session to give the Blues a 2-1 lead. Oshie doubled the advantage just over 10 minutes later, fending off Colorado defenseman Tyson Barrie while corralling the rebound of Backes' shot before slapping the puck past Varlamov.
Gunnarson's blast from the point deflected off Alex Tanguay and past Varlamov 8:06 into the first period to open the scoring. Duchene answered less than five minutes later as his backhand shot from the left circle deflected off former Avalanche member Paul Stastny's stick and past Elliott.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Steen has collected seven goals and 11 assists during his point streak, which is three contests shy of his career high. His 13-game point run was pieced together from Oct. 17-Nov. 16, 2013. ... Backes has recorded seven goals and as many assists during his point streak. ... Stastny picked up his third assist in his last two games versus his former team.
