Red Wings 3, Flames 2: Captain Henrik Zetterberg celebrated his 800th NHL game with a goal and an assist and visiting Detroit held on to edge Calgary.

Justin Abdelkader also scored a goal and set up another while Riley Sheahan added a tally for the Red Wings, who improved to 2-1-0 on their six-game road trip. Gustav Nyquist notched a pair of assists and Petr Mrazek turned aside 28 shots.

Mikael Backlund returned from injury to record a goal and an assist for the Flames, who fell to 3-2-0 on their six-game homestand. Mason Raymond also scored and Jonas Hiller allowed two goals on nine shots in relief of Karri Ramo, who made 12 saves before exiting with an apparent head injury.

Raymond gave Calgary an early lead as he grabbed his own rebound after his shot from the left faceoff circle was denied and wrapped it inside the right post 2:27 into the contest. Detroit answered 5 1/2 minutes later, when Sheahan raced down the right wing and lifted the puck over Ramo's left shoulder from low in the right circle.

Zetterberg snapped the tie with 2:32 left in the second period and Abdelkader buried his second chance from alone on the right side of the crease during a power play 2:03 into the third after his first attempt hit the left post. Backlund slipped a backhander past Mrazek from alone in front after receiving a lead pass from Paul Byron during a short-handed rush 3:10 later, but the Flames were unable to pull even.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ramo appeared to take a knee to the head from Flames D Raphael Diaz after coming way out of his net to smother the puck midway through the second period. ... Calgary was without leading scorer Jiri Hudler, who was with his wife at the hospital as the couple awaits the birth of its first child. ... Backlund was in the lineup for the first time since Oct. 28 due to an abdominal injury. ... Raymond's goal ended his 13-game drought.
